The Launch of Project AVA Focus Group Meetings - by Joy Osiagwu
The focus group meetings of the African Caribbean and Black vaccine Acceptance (AVA) project were exciting, informative and encouraging for the ACB communities in Ottawa and service providers.
Iafricavoices spoke with Dr Ruby Edet, the Vice President of the Canadians of African Descent Health Organization (CADHO), Anthonette "Toni" Jacob, the founder of the first and only Black-led holistic community centre in Ottawa, the venue of the event and Faqrudin Ali of the Ottawa Public Health (OPH).
Our crew also engaged Debbie Macharia, a beauty professional at the event, Itunu Taiwo of Co-Creath and CADHO.
Iafricavoices also engaged the AVA project lead, Dr Josephine Etowa, a professor of Nursing at the University of Ottawa and Ontario HIV Treatment Network Chair in Black Women's HIV Prevention and Care. She is also the founder and lead investigator of the Collaborative Critical Research for Equity and Transformation in Health (CO-CREATH) Lab.
Etowa described the meeting as a kick-starter for more significant engagements with the ACB Communities to share knowledge about optimizing vaccine acceptance and uptake and other health-related issues in Ottawa, Ontario.
